Review:

Minus Infinity, a self-described progressive-thrash band hailing from New Orleans and sporting 6 members, vocals, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, drums, bass, and keys. That’s right, KEYS. I am instantly intrigued by the thought of a progressive thrash band, and even more so when I see keys in the line-up. I have to admit, this band comes through in rare form. I pop in their three song promo, which by the way boasts 19:36 of sheer progressive brutality, and this is the way I heard it come back to me:

Axiom of the Ages, track one-This one kicks off with some spooky synth and haunting, animalistic screams, and is, of all three songs on the demo, the most progressive sounding musically with the unique guitar work, beautiful timing, killer drums and heavy thrashy vocals layered across the top. As heavy as the vocals are, they are understandable and wicked, and the band pulls off one of the most unique sounding songs I’ve heard in a long time.

Condescending, track two-Comes at you with a lick reminiscent of old DIO for a couple measures, then drops off into a deep, kick-ass build as the vocals come crashing in nice and deep and brutal. The song runs amuck as the rhythm guitar and bass pound away setting the stage for some very nice guitar work from the lead guitarist, again, reminiscent of DIO as it works it’s way through the song, changing and molding it, making way for the keys to ride in un-announced and unexpected but very effective and giving the song an epic sound. This song is easily my favorite of the three on the disk.

Conceptual Gap, track three-Speaking of epic sound, this one takes the cake. A beautiful build on the intro made me wish I was hearing this song for the first time in a planetarium, leaned back in the seat and watching an accompanying laser light show. This band can certainly bring it all to the table and they do in this song. Lots of changes, a heavy, driving rhythm, nice dual vocal work, and pounding, insane drum-work from a maniacal monster on the skins make this song the epitome of a progressive thrash band.

If I had to add anything to their description, I would have to call Minus Infinity epic as well as progressive thrash. Their music is nothing short of unique and I believe we will see this band go far in this industry. They have already shared the stage with such bands as Kataklysm, Misery Index, Cephalic Carnage, Mastadon, Soilent Green, Goatwhore, December, Demise, Skinkrawl, and many more. If you’re looking for something a little different, I suggest you check out Minus Infinity. I put their very cool sticker on my metal van in a nice prominent place for all the world to see and hopefully the added exposure will help bring this most excellent of thrash bands into the light.

Until next time...keep it heavy! http://www.minusinfinity.net
